Nike opens flagship store in SoHo!
After a tumultuous start, Nike SoHo has finally opened its doors. The brand’s flagship was set to open on November 10 after a high-profile media event, until it was discovered that Nike had applied for an alteration permit instead of a new building permit.
Nike faced many challenges opening the 55,000-square-foot store. First of all, SoHo zoning restrictions prohibit retail stores over 10,000-square-feet. Protesters have picketed outside both the Nike Soho location and the Departments of Buildings, asking for the store’s certificate of occupancy to be revoked.
The grand opening, which took place November 10th, drew a crowd of musicians, TV personalities, and sports figures. Daily Show host Trevor Noah, New York Giant’s wide receiver Victor Cruz, Olympian Ashton Easton, Eugenie Bouchard, Serena Williams, model Chanel Iman, and designer John Elliott were all in attendance.
