Summary: Using what they are learning in their science class, students developed original art works influenced by the night sky.

Objective

1. Understand the process of Batik

2. Create at least three sketches based on the project theme “The Night Sky”

3. Create an original batik work of art representing the theme “The Night Sky”

Materials: Fabric, Blue Gel (water soluble) Elmers glue, acrylic paint, metallic Sharpie markers

Steps to setting up and preparing

1. Lay out each piece on the table, tape down edges to make the surface easier to work with;

2. Set out necessary supplies: glue, or paints and other painting supplies;

3. Prepare drying rack boards for place the pieces on prior to the drying rack. (This will keep the fabric from hanging onto of other art work)

Directions

Step 1: Discussion about the night sky. Example questions include but are not limited to… What do you see? What can we not see but we learned is there? What could this theme mean to other people? Do we all see the same?

Step 2: Class demonstration- Batik

Draw your image with gel glue (Whatever is drawn with the glue will eventually go back to the original fabric

Step 3: Students will paint in the rest of the space on their fabric with acrylic paints.

Step 4: Wash out the glue in a hot water bath (Some scrubbing of the glue may be necessary in some cases)

Step 5: Students added embellishments using silver metallic sharpie markers.
