About
Summaryl Artist statement: “Edison’s Undiscovered Circuit Board, Patent Pending” By Hope Wilmarth, 2014
Thomas Edison holds the record for
number of U.S. patents and was the
greatest inventor of his time. Had he
lived, I do believe he might have
invented the circuit board. Edison died
in 1931 and the printed circuit board
was invented in 1936 by Paul Eisler.
Thomas Edison certainly “illuminated
the path of progress by his
inventions”, which is the notation on
his Congressional Gold Metal, awarded
in 1928.
My art piece was inspired by Edison’s quote: “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” I created a faux circuit board using recycled “junk”, items I found around the house, from unused film to corrugated cardboard and plastic bags. The title of my piece plays on the fact that Edison was a few years shy of the circuit board’s discovery and the fact that he had so many patents to his name.
The viewer is invited to discover how many recycled items are on this fiber circuit board.
