Top Fuel dragsters driven by J . R . Todd ( near lane ) and David Grubnic charge across the thousand-foot finish line during the final qualifying session at the inaugural NHRA Carolina Nationals . Grubnic and Todd ended up qualifying No . 8 and 10 , respectively , with Grubnic ’ s 3.876 in his Kalitta-fielded DHL dragster and Todd ’ s 3.883 in his Morgan Lucas Racing-fielded Lucas Oil entry . Things have changed quite a bit since then , as Todd now drives the DHL Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports and Grubnic is one of the most in-demand crew chiefs in Top Fuel . Todd won the 2018 NHRA Funny Car world championship , and Brittany Force ’ s Grubnic-tuned Monster Energy dragster holds the Top Fuel records for elapsed time and speed .
