THE INTERESTING STATE OF THE DI TOP 8 !
When the Drag Illustrated Top 8 program was conceived in early 2014 , it was designed to acknowledge and reward drivers in all aspects of drag racing who achieved performances which placed them within the eight quickest or fastest competitors in each class worldwide . It was a lofty idea which required an inordinate amount of work , intense confirmation research and constant surveillance of all activity in the sport around the globe every week . Moreover , it was an effort never before undertaken by any individual or publication in the history of drag racing periodicals . However , Drag Illustrated made it happen .
Readers may have noticed the disappearance of the Top 8 from the pages of DI for the past eleven issues . It certainly wasn ’ t due to a lack of racer or fan interest but , rather , it was caused by the biggest concern of the DI staff which was a lack of activity . The sport of drag racing changed during the Top 8 ’ s run of over seven years . In fact , the constant revision of drag racing ’ s regulations , presentation and general objective has made for far less movement among almost all drivers in almost all
categories . Those changes now dominate the sport is unusual ways which affect fans , racers , sponsors and even manufacturers .
A perfect example can be found in the sport ’ s premier divisions , Top Fuel Eliminator and Funny Car Eliminator . While the sport ’ s ultimate division hasn ’ t been an “ unlimited ” since 1957 and Funny Car has always been under multiple forms of restriction since 1969 , both have evolved into nearly the antithesis of their original design . While the rules revisions to each class have not been exceedingly quick , each was , indeed , amazingly effective in changing the performance of the vehicles in competition . From minimum weights to the abolition of computer control to a decrease in maximum nitromethane percentage to the annulment of different designs in superchargers , cylinder heads and blocks , each new rule has been enacted for the sole objective of slowing down the race cars . In many cases , the anticipated results were centered on driver and spectator safety but , more often than not , the revisions were styled to equalize competition and , most importantly , stop costs from escalating beyond the reach of the teams still able to field a car in Top Fuel or Funny Car in the first place .
It should always be remembered the switch to a racing distance of one thousand feet from the standardized quarter-mile was not initiated by the National Hot Rod Association . In fact , the NHRA spent months trying to figure out ways to continue a 1320-feet competition program but each NHRA option , ( all of which included new mechanical restrictions ), was perceived by the Professional Racers Organization , the sport ’ s “ union ” of fuel teams , as too expensive to enact and , instead , informed the
