The Champions of 2019 [ NHRA STOCK ] A llison Doll T he NHRA Stock Eliminator ranks are some of the most tight- ly contested in all of drag racing. Winning races can be an incredible feat, with the championship being even more difficult. The 2019 season would bring a first for the Stock class—a female champion. Allison Doll not only won the championship, but did it in grand fashion with a 525-point di- visional score and an ultra-impressive 689-point national score. Doll competed in NHRA Division 1 in the B/SA class. “There were a lot of highs and lows this year,” explains Doll, who handles design and product development at the family business, Portatree. “But what really got the job done was my divisional points—I won five divisionals this season. The first few races didn’t go so well, but then we hit a stretch where we did four races in a row and the last race I won. So that’s kind of what set the season in motion in some ways.” As the season progressed, Doll found her stride, winning five divisional races and two quarter-fi- nal national event finishes. But it wasn’t without its own unique challenges. “Unfortunately, my car is not what we call ‘very good against the index,’” Doll offers. “So my big- gest challenges where the heads-up races. That’s actually what hurt my national event score. I had two nationals where I had early-round losses due to heads-ups races that I just couldn’t win. But thankfully, it didn’t hurt us, it just hindered us. “I’d like to thank my husband, Doug, for tak- ing me to a lot of races and just being there for everything,” Doll adds. “My family – Al, Sue, and especially my brother, Steve Smyth, and my friend Johnny Moulton also. I’d also like to thank my main sponsor, Portatree.” – PETE EPPLE DI DI DI DI DI DI DI DI DI DI Charlie McCulloch Ja n u a r y 2 0 2 0 NMRA MODULAR MUSCLE // Larry Firestone NMRA SUPER STANG DragIllustrated.com | D r a g I l l u s t r a t e d | 81
