as four tenths of a second quicker than his
own by either outfoxing or outdriving them
all. In the final, Burgos met Mech-Tech College
teammate and fellow Puerto Rican Isais Rojas
in a Bickel-built turbocharged 2006 Scion tC.
Both shook the tires and Rojas won the event’s
biggest title.
MCBRIDE’S 5.50/264: GREATEST
BIKE RUN OF ALL TIME?
When “Spiderman” Larry McBride clocked a
simply indescribable 5.507 at 264.96 mph
during the recent Man Cup Championships at
South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta,
the wave of astonishment was felt in every
corner of the sport. Within the niche of
motorcycle drag racing itself, however, the
pass rocked every fan, racer and manufacturer
and ignited a debate to decide if it was, indeed,
motorcycle drag racing’s greatest moment.
Previously, the argument included only the
first Two Hundred MPH drag bike run or the
first Five Second motorcycle pass. It was the
legendary Elmer Trett who posted a 201.34

mph speed on a 7.16 pass on September 5,
1983, during the NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas
Oil Raceway, (then Indianapolis Raceway
Park), back when the NHRA ran Top Fuel
Motorcycles at its largest event. At the time, it
was a number many thought was years from
being achieved.
Interestingly, Trett owned the TFB ET
record at 6.06 for three years when McBride
unleashed a 5.993 at 243.68 mph at the 1999
Supernationals at Houston (TX) Raceway Park.
The run made such an impression the NHRA
named it “The Run of the Year” despite the
fact it was not included in the vast majority of
the event coverage.
McBride’s 5.50 was over a tenth quicker
than any run prior to the Valdosta event.
The speed was a record by over six miles
per hour. Even the eighth-mile ET, a record
McBride DIDN’T own going into the race, was
three hundreds of a second quicker than any
previous effort.
It’s important to remember McBride also
set the only six-second, two- hundred mph
record for an ELECTRIC vehicle, a Berube-pow-
ered Lawless motorcycle, and he did it eight
years ago. He set his first Top Fuel Motorcycle
record, (the ET mark at 6.49, the first under
6.5 seconds), nineteen years ago. His 2019 Top
Fuel World Championship was his TWENTIETH
World Title, a mark untouched by any other
drag racer.
Perhaps the argument should center on
whether Larry McBride, Steve McBride and
Roland Stuart comprise the greatest team
in motorcycle drag racing. His achievements
certainly make clear Larry McBride is one of
the sport’s greatest treasures.
