ELIMINATOR QUICKEST DRIVERS
Jason Rupert, the second-generation fuel pilot
who has owned the Nostalgia Nitro Funny
Car (AA/FC) speed record since his 262.03
mph blast at Bakersfield (CA) in March, 2012,
and his subsequent 262.39 at Martin (MI) in
August, 2015, annihilated his own marks with
an astounding 269.30 mph stunner during the
recent IHRA MoPar Rocky Mountain Nationals
at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta. The
Rupert and Littlefield ’69 Camaro, painted in
the same livery as the 1973 Vega of the late
Mert Littlefield, recorded the speed during
qualifying and ran as fast as 266.11 mph during
eliminations en route to a runner-up against
Shawn Bowen’s Michigan 1971 Dodge Challenger. The AA/FC record has been stuck at
5.55 seconds since Pete Gallen’s infamous run
of August, 2011, in his ’74 Vega at Martin (MI),
(5.557), and the subsequent effort of current
record holder Kris Krabill’s ’78 Firebird at the
annual “March Meet” at Bakersfield (CA) in
2016, (5.552). Rupert missed the elapsed time
mark by a solitary thousandth of a second on
the 269 pass at 5.553. The Nostalgia floppers
are now within five miles per hour of their
front-engine Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster (AA/
FD) brethren.
Barton Puts the Sport in
Factory Stock Shock!
The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown
(NJ), is one of the four races on the Lucas Oil/
Mello Yello tour which includes the Factory
Stock Showdown, a heads-up battle among
the quickest qualifiers in the FS/XX class
within NHRA’s Stock Eliminator program.
Coming into the race, Clay Arnett’s 2015
COPO Camaro, (using a 2.9 liter supercharger
atop the platform’s LS 350 cubic-inch engine

and TurboHydro 400 transmission), owned the
quickest and fastest pass in Stock Eliminator
history with an 8.32/165.80 recorded at 2015
edition of the annual Fall Classic National
Open contested at Lucas Oil Raceway in
Indianapolis (IN).
During qualifying for the Factory Stock
bash, Pennsylvania star David Barton drove
his own COPO Chevrolet to the pole position
of the eight-car field with an indescribable
8.256-second pass while just missing the
absolute speed record at 165.58 mph. While
Barton went on to win the title, it should be
noted several opponents were clocking nearly
identical eighth-mile performances, (5.28/132).
These production cars, available to any human
wishing to purchase one, are producing well
over 1100 horsepower with stock equipment
and they are posting those numbers while
weighing over 3200 pounds and running on
nine inch-wide slicks. These same machines
are running quicker elapsed times than the supercharged, nitro-burning 1800-pound Funny
Cars of a half-century ago.
However, when the NHRA made public its
plans to completely dispose of the Automatic
Horsepower Factoring System, (which has
castrated sportsman racing performance for
the past two decades), during the upcoming
Chevrolet-backed NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indy,
it changed the entire complexion of sportsman
racing albeit for only one event. For the first
time in many, many years, racers will be able
to “show their hand” during class eliminations
at the most important race on the planet and
folks around the globe are praying for “good
air” in the heartland during Labor Day 2016
if only to see how quick and fast the Factory
Stockers really CAN go.
