H. HEATING, VENTILATION, AND AIR CONDITIONING
H1.
SEALED COMBUSTION UNITS
DRAFT
CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION Up to three points are available for furnaces or water heaters that are any one of the following:
True sealed combustion unit: Sealed combustion equipment draws its combustion air directly from outside the home and exhausts its combustion products directly out of the home. The air intakes and exhaust are sealed off from the inside of the home, which greatly reduces the chance for any spillage of combustion products into the home.
Power vented units( such as fan driven exhaust vents) in attached garages, vented attics, vented crawlspaces, exterior recessed boxes, or exterior closets with manufacturer specified outside air vents.
Passive atmospherically vented or natural draft units outside the building( for example, in a carport). This type of equipment in the attic, garage, or crawlspace does not meet this measure.
Gas furnaces or water heaters on the roof or on the outside of an exterior wall and outside the building envelope.
Electric appliances, such as electric tank( less) water heaters or heat pumps( for either space heating or water heating).
 Other electric space heating appliances.
Note: This measure is a requirement associated with measure J9,“ EPA Indoor airPlus Certification,” on page 71.
Points will be allocated as follows: H1.1. Sealed Combustion Furnace( 1 Point) H1.2. Sealed Combustion Water Heater( 2 Points)
VERIFICATION
Field Verification: The Rater will conduct field compliance verification and take photos showing sealed combustion unit( s).
INTENT
To improve indoor health and safety by eliminating the use of indoor air for combustion. To eliminate the potential for backdrafting.
