C17. COMMUNITY GARDEN
CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION
Two points of credit is available for providing a community garden on site( Option 1) or provide access to Community Supported Agriculture( Option 2).
Option 1: For a project that is using a community garden. The project must meet the following:
Establish covenants, conditions, and restrictions( CC & R) or other forms of deed restrictions that do not prohibit the growing of produce in project area, including greenhouses, any portion of residential front, rear, or side yards; or balconies, patios, or rooftops. Greenhouses, but not gardens, may be prohibited in front yards that face the street.
Dedicate permanent and viable growing space and / or related facilities( such as greenhouses) within the project. Garden should be located on site but must be within ½ mile of all residences. Ensure that the spaces are owned and managed by an entity that includes occupants of the project in its decision making, such as a community group, homeowners’ association, or public body.
The garden area must be the size as stipulated as a minimum of 30 sq. ft per unit for 50 % of the residences. The garden area is defined as the area available for gardening and excludes pathways, storage and other areas not available for planting.
The site must have all of the following:
� solar access � fencing � water supply( could we add a point for purple-pipe at community garden?) � garden shed for tool storage � accommodations for planting areas including raised beds if necessary � pedestrian access
Note: This measure applies to multifamily projects only.
VERIFICATION
Documentation: The Rater will collect verification of current BFQP certification or equivalent certification of the professional on the maintenance team.
INTENT
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and energy consumption caused by transporting food great distances.
