B
Foundation
Install a continuous, durable termite shield at the junction of the foundation and piers and mudsill, where pipes and other utilities penetrate the foundation, and wherever slab perimeter insulation is installed.
Structural exterior wood elements( such as mudsills, posts, and stairs) in permanent contract with concrete or soil, such as posts, deck supports, and stair stringers, will remain moist for prolonged periods. Creating a separation with metal or plastic fasteners / dividers( for example, an elevated post holder) will allow water to drain and wood to easily dry out, or avoid wood-to-concrete connections.
Note: caulking between the sill and foundation is not an acceptable means of termite shield. B5.2. Plant Trunks, Bases, or Stems at Least 36 Inches from the Foundation( 1 Point)
Maintaining a minimum distance of 36 inches from the exterior wall to the center of the plant stem and trunk keeps roots away from the foundation, reduces the chance of pests traveling from nearby branches onto the home, and allows the homeowner to more easily inspect for termite tunnels around the home’ s foundation walls.
This measure applies to all plants, shrubs, trees, and ground covers.
VERIFICATION Measure B5.1
Field Verification: The Rater must take representative photos of termite shields at mudsills and piers. These efforts can be easily verified at any stage of construction.
Measure B5.2
Field Verification: The Rater must conduct field verification and take representative photos. Field verification should include measurements from the building exterior wall to the plant trunk or stem. Photos should include a tape measure from the exterior wall to the center of the trunk or stem.
INTENT
To increase the durability of the construction by installing permanent, non-chemical measures to reduce damage caused by common pests and rot
