Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Documentation: A mechanical engineer, HVAC installer, or other appropriate professional should provide documentation of ventilation duct layout and supply grilles. INTENT To improve indoor air quality (IAQ), incorporating best practices into the design, installation, and operation of whole-house mechanical ventilation systems.
H10.
RANGE HOOD DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
CRITERIA FOR QUALIFICATION Up to two points are available as follows: H10.1. Kitchen Range Hood Exhaust System Vented to the Outside (1 Point) The Rater will verify, through representative photos, that the fan exhausts to the outside. The Rater shall not verify the size or sone rating. Note that downdraft, side draft, or wall draft fans are highly discouraged for this measure due to their relative ineffectiveness and propensity for significant depressurization of the home. H10.2. Effective Range Hood Design and Installation (1 Point) The following list describes prescriptive practices to address and improve the capture effectiveness of pollutant removal, all of which must be met: ? ? ? ? ? The capture hood of the range must extend at least 75% over the front burners, to make sure the hood can capture the front burners. The fan(s) must be recessed in the capture hood. The inlet must be mounted in the center of the capture hood. The fan(s) must move a minimum of 200 cfm. The fan(s) must have a sone rating of 3 sones or less for 200 cfm.
The following must be verified: ? ? If the range hood moves more than 400 cfm, then make up air must be interlocked with the range hood. If the house contains natural draft combustion appliances, then the sum of the two largest exhaust fans in the house cannot exceed 15 cfm per square foot.
VERIFICATION Measure H10.1 Field Verification: The Rater will conduct field compliance verification of venting to the exterior and take photos of the ducting to the exterior. Measure H10.2 Field Verification: The Rater will conduct field compliance verification of capture hood alignment with front burners, presence of the recessed fan, and that the fan meets specifications.
