Why do you feel it's important for young people to be exposed to 'indie' theatre?

In Brisbane we have a strong culture of people creating their own work, this is partly due to necessity but also because we have a rich culture of multi-talented artists out there who are wanting to get their work seen. Many mainstream works come out of the Indie world & it’s important for us as a cultural community to get behind these works and support them from the ground up. I also think that if young people see Indie work then it gives them belief in their own ability to create and produce their own works. It is through these works that our cultural community grows.

What is next for you?

I have quite a shift after this, from directing and producing a new cutting edge work, I will move to directing the iconic musical Company by Stephen Sondheim for Ignatians which will be playing in the Roundhouse at La Boite in June/July. My life is never dull, always challenging and very exciting!

What advice would you give aspiring young writers / directors?

• Don’t take no for an answer, consider it to be a ‘not this time’.

• Keep working on your craft (workshops and training)

• Work with as many different people as you can and grow your networks and skills base.

• Put yourself forward and be proud of what you achieve.

• Every experience we have in this industry makes us richer as artists (whether they be good or bad

experiences).

• Go and see lots of different types of work and support local artists – grow your aesthetic.

• Be brave!
