Aquatic Programs Des Plaines Park District Learn to Swim Programs Parent/Tot • Ages 6 months–3 years Basic water adjustment and swimming skills are introduced through songs and games. The primary focus of this class is to make your c hild feel comfortable in the water. Preschool • Ages 3–5 years We offer two levels of our popular preschool swim program. Parents are not in the water during these classes. Children will not be moved to Level 1 until they turn 6 years old. Preschool 1 This program is geared toward children who have no previous experience and/or are apprehensive in the water. Through songs and games our instructors introduce your child to the fun world of swimming. Preschool 2 This program is best suited to children who have previous swimming experience and no fear of the water. Basic swimming skills are incorporated through songs and games. Level 1 skills are introduced. Group Lessons for ages 6 and older Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills Helps students feel comfortable in the water using basic swimming and water safety skills. Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills This class introduces the basics of swimming including floating without support, combined arm and leg action, and forward motion. Level 3: Stroke Development Building on the basics from Level 2, students learn coordination of the front and back crawl, introduction to butterfly, treading water, and beginning head first entry. Level 4: Stroke Improvement Helps to develop confidence in the strokes learned in previous levels, improve strokes, and increase endurance. The basics of turning at the wall are introduced. Level 5: Stroke Refinement Participants refine their performance of all the stokes: front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke, and increase their distance. Flip turns on the front and back are introduced. This semi-competitive swimming program is part of the Northern Illinois Swim Conference, which is a network of area park districts and swim clubs that have the same goal of getting kids involved in a fun, fair, and safe environment. The emphasis of the program is placed on learning competitive skills, enjoyment of the sport, and promoting lifelong participation in swimming. The Warriors Swim Team is a summer program based out of Chippewa pool. Practices are Monday thru Friday mornings with home and away swim meets on Wednesday evenings. Swimmers are requested to have basic swimming skills before joining the team, including floating, swimming 25 yards of the pool (untimed and unassisted), and being comfortable in deep water. Look for registration information in the Spring Spectrum. Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency In this level, swimmers continue to refine all six strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Adult Swim Lessons Ages 15+ You’re never too old to learn how to swim! Our patient and helpful staff can eliminate unnecessary fears as they teach the basic strokes. Please note: Lifeguard training will be held in the other half of the pool during this time. International Lifeguard Training Program Ages 16+ Get ready for summer by preparing for a job that is both challenging and rewarding! At the completion of this course, successful lifeguard candidates are eligible to be fully licensed through the popular Jeff Ellis and Associates, Inc. program. This is the program we use to train our award winning Des Plaines Park District lifeguards! (Visit jellis.com) •Course includes water safety and rescue techniques, CPR, first aid, AED certification, and oxygen support training. •Internet access is required in order to complete the book and test portion of this course prior to the class dates. •Completion of this class does not guarantee employment with the Des Plaines Park District. •Successful candidates who require a certificate of completion for employment at another agency will be charged an additional $50 at the successful completion of the program.
