Northerly Island,
The Adler Planetarium,
John G. Shedd Aquarium Skylines,
stars, and seas.
We begin our day exploring Northerly
Island, a 91-acre peninsula at the heart of
the Museum Campus. The island is devoted
to nature, and the strolling paths offer a
spectacular view of the Chicago skyline.
We will spend the morning at the Adler
Planetarium seeing the Solar System,
Planet Explorers, and Cyberspace exhibits
and the “Welcome to the Universe” sky
show. After a box lunch, we will walk ½ mile
to the Shedd Aquarium to experience the
waters of the world including the wet, wild,
and wonderful exhibits of rivers, oceans, and
the Great Lakes. We will visit the whales,
dolphins and sea lions of the Oceanarium,
and watch for anacondas and piranhas in
the exotic Amazon.

Illinois and Michigan Canal
Locktender’s Tour and
Canal Boat Ride
Our day begins at the Aux Sable access
point to the I&M Canal with a guided tour
of the Locktender’s house; the oldest grain
elevator along the canal; Lock #8, and the
rebuilt Aux Sable aqueduct. Then, we are off
the Ottawa to see the I&M Canal Tollhouse,
the only original tollhouse that still exists on
the canal. Next, we will travel to the LaSalle
Canal Boat and meet Larry and Moe, the
famous mules who pull the replica canal
boat, and attend Mule Tending 101 to learn
about these work animals. We will enjoy
lunch and entertainment circa 1848 on the
canal boat, gliding along the I&M. We will
have time to shop in the Lock 16 gift shop
and Visitor Center. Lunch and an afternoon
snack are included.

Klehm Arboretum and
Botanical Gardens, and
Anderson Japanese Gardens, Rockford, IL
Enjoy a day at the gardens! In the heart of
historic Rockford is a sanctuary of peace, an
abundance of beauty, and a playground of
wonder. Klehm Arboretum is a living museum;
155 acres of rare plants unlike anywhere else
in the world. We will explore the diversity of
trees and plants along their winding trails,
and then travel to the Anderson Japanese
Gardens, a place for reflection, serenity,
and renewal. These gardens are lush with
traditional planting, waterfalls, bridges, and
sculptures that exemplify the Japanese
cultural heritage of respectful humility in
service to people of all cultures. A garden
party lunch is included, and shopping is
available in the gift shops.
