Camping , a Perfect Way to Rough It
DownEast Acadia offers an unbelievably diverse number of ways to enjoy camping . Many public and private campgrounds here offer RVs , tents , and cabin sites on lakes and rivers . There are also remote campsites to pick from along the Downeast Lakes Water Trails , a few on Rocky Lake , and some in the Machias Lakes and Grand Lakes area . If you ’ re looking to spend the night along a remote watery pond or lake , remember that most of these waterside sites are paddle-in rather than hike-in . Expand your horizons by hiring a Registered Maine Guide for day trips or canoe-camping trips .
Most remote campsites on public land come with picnic tables and fire pits . We also suggest you check to see if reservations are required . A burn permit is required on sites with no fire pit . Do not bring firewood from another state . Never cut live trees . Follow Leave No Trace principles : plan ahead and be prepared , dispose of waste properly , leave what you find , and respect wildlife and other campers .
