Shopping is a True Maine delight.
When you visit think local and look for brightly colored “open” pennants. Then enjoy your
retail adventure with some of Maine’s most friendly and welcoming shopkeepers. Be ready
to talk about everything from the weather to where you’re from.
Artists and artisans often throw open their studios to welcome visitors, so be sure to get off
the beaten path on your hunt for treasure. For generations, both Deer Isle/Stonington and
Blue Hill have fostered galleries and studios galore. Eastport, Bucksport, and downtown
Ellsworth are also an excellent place to find beautiful works of art and artistry. Stop into the
many artisan workshops featuring basketry, ironwork, fiber art, and printmaking. Join an art
class at a local arts organizations and businesses or shop like an art collector during your visit.

The Rock & Art Shop
Much of what you’ll find while shopping in DownEast Acadia was made, cooked, crafted,
painted, sculpted, or built within a few miles—or maybe even a few feet of the register. That
is why we’ve put together an abbreviated guide—on the opposite page—of shops and stores
that we’d suggest stopping by during your next visit.
