The water is equally amazing in the inland areas of DownEast Acadia, offering adventure
away from the hustle-bustle of the coast. Travel scenic byways with panoramic views,
paddle through chains of inland lakes, ponds, and vast inland peat bogs. Take in the
quiet peace of lush hardwood forests flowing with bright, sparkling water from streams
and rivers that look untouched by man.
Head out on one of Maine’s most renowned inland waterways. The Down East Lakes and
Orange River Water Trails are populated with hundreds of bird species, bears, white-tailed
deer, and moose. Fish in their cold clear waters–some home to the last remaining salmon
runs–interspersed with beaver dams and unbroken shorelines. From State Route 9—also
called The Airline you can quickly connect to the Machias River Corridor to explore the
opportunities for remote lakeside camping that lie beyond.
Grand Lake Stream and the surrounding communities have long been a favorite destination
for fly fishers in a lake system known for its land-locked salmon. Other freshwater species
include white and yellow perch, and brook and lake trout. A little further afield, trophy-
worthy smallmouth bass await in Big Lake.
