A warm welcome to our Summer Newsletter . With so much going on , both at home and abroad , my colleagues and I hope you will enjoy this edition and that all the subtle references to the Wizard of Oz will make you smile . With a name like “ Dorothy ” House , it was inevitable that at some point we ’ d have to acknowledge the obvious connection , and this felt like the right time . After all , as Judy Garland put it best , there ’ s quite simply no place like home .

Going right back , almost to the beginning of the Hospice in 1976 , we have provided most of our care in people ’ s homes . In fact , when Dorothy House started it was in the home of our founder , Prue Dufour . So in these times , when close and trusted local advice and support feels more important than ever , we want you to see us as your valued neighbour .
As you ’ ll read in this update , we ’ re exploring creative new ways to enhance our care and support in your community . Building on the end of life care that we provide directly , our quest is to provide wider support into the heart of your community , making even more meaningful connections with local people ,
So just as Dorothy and her three new friends needed help along their journey to Oz , so do most of us ; but do we all know where to go for help to locate services , groups and resources ? Learning about this will strengthen our support and we want to do this with you , our community ! Where we find strong support , we will connect and build on this . And where we see gaps , we will work to fill these together with your support .
It is our hope that the impact of this approach will be profound and reach right across every town , village and neighbourhood in our 700sq mile area .
Finally , we wish Kate Tompkins a fond farewell , with our deepest gratitude , as she retires after an amazing 10 years of supporting , enabling and leading the Hospice , as both a Trustee and most recently as our Chair ( page 7 ).
So please read on and let ’ s pool our skills , talents and time – there ’ s no telling what the impact will be on your street and mine .
