AFTER, 2009
This neon work was part of the performance K.62 and K.85 by Dominique GonzalezFoerster and Ari Benjamin Meyers, staged at the Abrons Art Center in New York on the
occasion of the Performa 2009. In 2011 these two performances were also shown at
the Hebbel am Ufer Theater, Berlin and Kaaitheater, Brussels.
The work plays on the idea of an “after party.” It also references the Martin Scorsese film
After Hours (1985), deriving its typeface from the actual film poster. The film takes place
in New York City, charting the surprising and surreal events in the life of its protaganist
over the course of one night.
The performance staged by Gonzalez-Foerster and Benjamin Meyers also took the
events of this film as a reference point, leading the viewers on a surreal obstacle course
through Soho, before gathering the group under Gonzalez-Foerster’s neon sign “After.”
