SR: Yes, I am very fortunate and blessed to have a large supportive and talented family. Support is an understatement for what Mom & Dad have given and invested in my passions and me. My parents recognized my love for music and entertainment when I was very young. They enrolled me in private vocal and later piano lessons. In addition to my music lessons, they enrolled me in dance lessons and Community Theater. I was even in a performing arts aftercare program. My parents also enrolled me in many different activities outside of my the artistic programs. I was in Girl Scouts, Just Say No, basketball, swim lessons, tennis and ice-skating lessons. But, I always favored performing arts. Throughout middle and high school I was in the choral programs, dance team, drama and continued in Community Theater. My Mother was a Makeup Artist and Stage Mom for many of my plays and events. Freshman year of high school, we started an R&B Girls group by the name of “Image” my mom was our manager then and she is still my manager now.
DM: Speaking on support there is a stigma around the area (DMV) of how there is a lack of support in the area would you agree or disagree and please explain?
SR: Both…I agree that DMV has a long way to go, compared to Atlanta, Cali or New York especially when it comes to supporting Hip Hop/Rap artist. But, it has come a long way and improved a lot over the last five years. But over the past few years, the opportunities and venues have grown. I believe that with the success of artist like Wale and Fat Trel, doors are beginning to open in the DMV.
DM: Now as we wrap up this is a question I want you to think of for the next ambitious little girl who has a dream and wants to chase it, what advice would you give her?
SR: Know your worth, your value and use your voice, speak up. Don’t let someone else define your value. Be more than pretty face and a big behind. Focus on your education, learn your craft and the industry. There are a lot snakes in the entertainment business and since so much of this industry is driven by image and beauty, there are a lot of vultures who will prey on you and try to reduce you down to just your looks. Be smart, be on guard, seek advice and trust your instincts.
I thank you for giving us your time and we here at Dominext wish you the best of luck in all endeavors you are and will be going for!!! -Tripple O
