And no organization is tasked more clearly to do so than the Parent Clubs, whose job it is to protect their breeds, including protecting them from mediocrity … or worse. No job in the show dog world could be more difficult or fraught with more pitfalls. The Parent Clubs must address the mundane aspects of the organization just to keep the club alive. They must nominate and elect officers. They must keep an eye on and, if necessary, amend their bylaws, which they seem to do with alarming frequency. They must make sure the club is financially healthy, in order to fund all projects. They must plan for and support their national specialties. Those of us who serve or have served as officers of a Parent Club know how timeconsuming and arduous all of this is, even if all of the members of the club are getting along — not fighting among themselves, circulating petitions or calling for impeachment of the officers. But we must find the time in the midst of all of this to do the best we can for our breeds, by helping new breeders learn all they can before they start breeding and helping experienced breeders learn more. When planning seminars, we need to address the importance of advancing the quality of our dogs while we advance their health. For people who are really new to the breed or even to purebred dogs, a wonderful learning experience would be simply to be told where to find the best information. Who are the best people to talk to? What publications offer the most reliable information? What books are the best to read and where can they be found? There are shelves full of books that offer so much wisdom and advice that comes from experience and success. For example, two fairly new books stand out: Keys to Top Breeding, Volumes One and Two, the first written by Pekka Hannula and Marjo Nygard, the second by those two and several co-authors and editors, published a few years apart. The first volume is full of breeding advice from some of the most successful breeders in the world. The second book is full of practical advice, on subjects as wide-ranging as sire selection, how to find the best information, construction, and even selling and placing puppies. We certainly live in the age of information, and who better to help disseminate that information and stress its importance than our Parent Clubs? We rely on them for so many things that it seems unseemly to ask for more. But it is essential that we think about the quality and the essential type in our breeds in the future or we may not have the future that we want. DIR OCTOBER 2016 DOGS IN REVIEW 117
