We ’ re starting out the new year with this report , which includes the first three weekends of January . We found a total of 64 all-breed events held over this time period , and one additional event was canceled due to weather conditions . The average entry among these shows came to about 1,175 , which is due in part to eight events with entries in excess of 2,000 dogs . The first weekend of the year saw shows in just six states , starring the very large shows in Indio , Calif . Following a large number of specialties and group shows , the two all-breed events of the KC of Palm Springs drew over 3,000 dogs each , very similar to what they enjoyed last year . These great shows pulled the average entry for the weekend up to 1,437 dogs per show .
There were 22 shows held on the following weekend , taking place in seven venues . The Puyallup Valley DF and Tacoma KC shows in Puyallup each attracted over 2,000 dogs , doing slightly better than they did in 2016 . The total of around 23,600 dog entries made for an average entry of over 1,000 dogs per event on the weekend .
Finally , the third weekend of January

involved 29 shows in 10 cities — it would have been 30 but for the cancellation in Florida . The big numbers were at the four-show cluster in Portland , with every event drawing well over 2,000 dogs , representing a total cluster gain of around 250 entries for the Tualatin KC and DFA of Oregon clubs , each of which hosted two shows . These and other shows with very respectable entries in Florida and Michigan brought the average entry over the weekend up to over 1,100 dogs per |
event , with nearly 33,000 dog entries .
