How Dandies Have Changed
These three winners represented the type of Dandie I prefer . Although I had no knowledge of their pedigrees at the time , I was surprised to learn they each had connections to my own kennel . As a second-generation Dandie breeder , born in Britain , who showed Dandies as a child before emigrating to Canada and who has observed the vicissitudes of the breed over five decades , I have watched the breed improve considerably , particularly in the past decade . Gone are the over-exaggerated toplines , with too steep a rise over the loin and tails growing out of the highest point of the back . ( The standard calls for a “ slight ” dip behind the wither and “ corresponding ” rise over the loin — which one must remember also means slight .) Gone are the small , beady , almond-shaped eyes , set high on the head .
It is possible that some of this improvement is due to the relaxation of the restrictive quarantine laws that kept dogs out of Britain until 2003 when the “ pet passport ” was introduced .
It has been written that the pet passport scheme has changed British Dandie Dinmonts for the better . Whether that is true or not , I cannot say . But I ’ m proud to have bred Britain ’ s top Dandie sires for seven years , especially in 2010 , when Can . Ch ./ UK Ch . Glahms Royal Canadian was No . 3 Terrier sire and tied for No . 12 all breeds . His achievements were directly due to my ( now deceased ) British mentors who had so generously offered me their top dogs so long ago . As a tribute to their kindness , it was time to return the favor . DIR
