Hidden Sodium - Where Does it Lurk ?
The number one reason people choose convenient foods over health is the flavor . One of the cheapest ways to make food taste good is by adding salt ( sodium ).
Here are the salty facts about sodium :
• the body only requires 500 mg of sodium per day
• it ' s recommended to have no more than 2,400 mg of sodium per day
• the average person takes in more than 4,000 mg per day
Excess sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure ( hypertension ) but not by itself . Family history , excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to the condition . More than 50 million Americans ( 1 in 4 ) have high blood pressure , with African Americans being more susceptible .
High blood pressure can also lead to other health issues , such as heart disease and kidney disease , and strokes .
Make Smarter Food Choices
All prepared foods are prepackaged and contain a high content of sodium . You can lower your sodium intake by eliminating the following foods from your diet : potato and corn chips , pretzels , popcorn , canned soups and vegetables . Cured and smoked meats , bacon , ham , sausage , and both natural and processed cheese .
Hold the Salt Shaker
Eliminate using excess salt by seasoning food naturally . Use citrus juices like lemon and lime to brighten up flavors . Add fresh herbs like basil , thyme , and rosemary to add a savory punch . Try salt-free seasoned blends like Mrs . Dash for soups , casseroles , and other hearty dishes . Rinse canned vegetables to remove added salt , but remember , you can never go wrong with buying fresh or frozen
