AFN Announces Dates for High Definition TV
George A. Smith
The overseas military audience is weeks
away from a major improvement in American
Forces Network (AFN) TV services: High
Definition (HD) signal quality.
Here is where they (and you) may get
updates: www.myafn.net/afnhd:
“We know our audience has been
expecting HD programming for a while
now,” said AFN Director Col. Dave
Honchul. “I’m proud to announce the
dates when the most deserving viewers in
the world will get the quality viewing
experience and touch of home they so
richly deserve.”
AFN’s new satellite transmission
system enables the military broadcast
network to deliver the eight-channel
Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Satellite
Network (SATNET) services in HD and
improve the video quality for audience
members receiving the three-channel
Direct to Sailor (DTS) service. HD may not
be available in all areas as some
installation cable infrastructures may not
be able to distribute the HD signal under
their current configuration.
Viewers will not have to adjust their
satellite dishes as a result of the change.
However, viewers will have to make minor
changes to their decoder settings. A
step-by-step instruction guide for both the
Cisco 9865 and AFN7500HD decoders, the
only decoders which will work after the
signal transition, will be available on
www.myafn.net/afnhd.
AFN plans a phased transition to ensure
total operability of its new broadcast
systems. The transition is phased as
follows:
Nov. 14 - DTS Pacific
Nov. 28- DTH/SATNET Pacific Japan, Korea
Dec. 5 - DTS Atlantic/Indian Ocean Reg.
Dec. 12- DTH/SATNET Europe, the
Americas, Southwest Asia and Africa
