WHY HAVE PILOT HOLES? When you are working in solid wood you will get the most effective and longest-lasting fastening power from screws when you drill correctly sized pilot holes. Pilot holes guarantee that your screw won’ t break off and your wood won’ t crack. Skipping the pilot hole can create hairline cracks in the wood. Visible cracks are obviously bad, but other cracks that are too small to see can eventually widen and the screw will eventually loosen.

WHY COUNTERSINK SCREWS? Driving a screw into a hole that isn’ t countersunk will have a very small point of contact, which exerts brutal sheer forces and tears the wood grain apart. A countersunk screw, on the other hand, has a large contact surface to a cleanly-cut wood funnel, and the resulting direction of the force is mostly downwards. This ensures the surrounding wood don’ t crack, the finish looks neat and the screw head is perfectly flush with the wood.
