Throughput: A card reader in a busy supermarket checkout can process
around 500 transactions a day, which amounts to a huge number of
transactions in a year – approaching a quarter of a million payments per
year.

Technology evolution: Card readers tend to be replaced when
technology upgrades become available, and practices around card
payment are always under review. In a short space of time most
transactions have shifted from signature to PIN.

Size: A card reader takes up approximately 100-200cm2 on the checkout
desk.
In Northern Europe: It is usual for supermarkets and high volume or
high transaction retailers to mount their card readers and many options
for mounting are offered, including fixings for horizontal surfaces or vertical
surfaces and poles of different heights.

Cable: The card reader is physically linked to the power supply and
the banking network, and the cables may be concealed within the
mounting device.

Shoulder surfing: A computer security term for the crime of looking over
someone’s shoulder to get their passwords and PINs. It can take place at a
point-of-sale terminal, and can even be done from a distance using closed
circuit TV cameras.

readers are most likely to be damaged.
