What to do on the island
Excursions on Fuerteventura are most relaxing with a rental car . The price is good and with a navigation system certainly no one gets lost .
Betancuria , the old small and beautifully restored village is in the mountains towards the west coast . Founded in 1405 , it is the oldest town on Fuerteventura and the former capital . A stroll between the beautiful historic houses does not take long , but is definitely worth it . The small church is also a museum ( photo on the right ).
Worth a visit , too , is the view point Mirador Morro Velosa . You follow a road high up until you reach the place at 650 me tres above sea level and will have a great view to the northern part of Fuerteventura – also from the restaurant terrace . In the building in front of it hides a small museum with information and models on the origin of the volcanic and oldest of the Canary Islands . Informative boards and photos explain the flora and fauna including details about the whales that live here .
Right next to Caleta de Fuste is the Salt Museum by the sea . Here it becomes clear how important the salt trade used to be – and how difficult the salt extraction was .
Close by is the small , quiet restaurant Los Caracolitos : our ultimate advice for a nice dinner in Caleta de Fuste . If you prefer just a short walk : El Capitan is a very good restaurant and also a cool pub .
The trip can be combined with a visit to the Museo del Queso Majorero ( museum of cheese ) near Antigua . There , you learn everything about the island-typical Majorero Cheese and about the special goat species of Fuerteventura . The botanical garden around with huge cactuses is very impressive .
Anyone who wants to experience a goat farm finds the best opportunity on the Finca Pepe ( www . fincapepe . com ) near Betancuria . From the rearing of the small ticks to the sale of the mild goat cheese , the whole production chain can be seen .
The eco-museum village Museo Arqueologico de Betancuria shows how life on „ Fuerte “ used to be . The small ensemble consists of several restored farm houses . There also is one of the typical windmills of the island .
