In autumn and in the latest months of winter another impressive spectacle occurs especially in the scenery of the rocky reefs . Almost , due to overfishing , it would not have been possible to observe it anymore . Who would have thought that the sluggish and harmless angel sharks ( Squatina squatina ) are threatened ? They are on of the list of most endangered shark species in the world . In winter , they frolic among the boulders . It is the time when the smaller males start following the larger females who are ready to mate . By this you see male angel sharks swimming around quite often . Regularly , the females are hiding between large blocks or well camouflaged , sometimes half of the body covered by sand , on the seabed in front of the rocks . At first glance one could almost think that it was a ray species ; but the animal is a shark with no doubt .
