It ‘ s also not bad if the centre ‘ s programme is aimed at divers from beginners to experienced divers . This is not only the case off Pereybére in terms of the reefs . „ With half a dozen shipwrecks , there ‘ s something for everyone ,“ says dive centre manager Rama Soondun , adding immediately : „ Only the ones at extreme depths for tech divers are not on our list .“
The twin wrecks „ Emily “ and „ Water Lily “ offer the opposite of extreme depth . The latter is the first wreck to be deliberately scuttled off the Mauritian coast . Since the end of August 1980 , it has served as an artificial reef at a depth of around 25 metres . The barge , which was 59 years old at the time , transported fresh water for the island ‘ s supply , among other things . The „ Emily “ is just a few fin strokes away . Nine months later , it was laid aground right next to the „ Water Lily “. And yes : the artificial reef worked perfectly , even if nothing of the superstructure can be seen today . „ Dense schools of fish are just as much at home here as stonefish , nudibranchs and the like ,“ says Rama .
The wreck „ KT Mawar “, which was only sunk in 2018 , is one size larger than the two barges directly off the coast . The wreckage is accordingly well preserved and lies on its side . As soon as one is under the surface , the iron hull can be seen . With perfect weather conditions the ship can be spotted from the surface . The upper edge is just under 15 metres deep and the sandy seabed here is around 25 metres deep . This makes this wreck site suitable for all levels of training . The mast overgrown with soft coral juts out into the open water above the former crow ‘ s nest like a colourful index finger . In other respects , too , the „ KT Mawar “ is by no means a cold piece of iron . Lots of animals have long since made it their home . Almost like a serious security guard , a gigantic large net-
