There are two public beaches right next to the resort . The one in the photo on the right is rarely visited and ancient lava . There are no fringing reefs or coral atolls rising up from great depths with endless drop-offs like in the Maldives .
Nevertheless , corals of various species have colonised the rocky substrate around the island . There are large gorgonian fans at some dive sites , impressively large , sometimes man-sized black corals have grown in other places and leather coral species are particularly common . The Mauritius anemone with its blood-red mantle is particularly impressive . Some of these specimens grow to enormous sizes .
The rocky reefs are home to small and larger schools of fish , such as blue-striped snappers , soldier fish , fusiliers and other typical schooling animals of the Indian Ocean .
However , you don ‘ t have to do without big fish such as sharks either – but you need a bit of luck to encounter them just off the coast . Round Island , on the other hand , which is around two hours away by boat , offers an ( almost ) guaranteed shark encounter . A big group of reef sharks can be found there for several months during the European winter months .
