Head east along the cliffs – offering amazing views – to Ribeira( where, in the upper reaches of the islands longest watercourse, there is a fantastic landscape of waterfalls and lakes). The cave labyrinth( Grutas) n in São Vicente was formed around 400,000 years ago. In the town‘ s parish church you can see true Baroque exuberance.
The route eventually leads back across the island towards the south, through Madeira’ s majestic mountain scenery to the Boca da Encumeada Pass( with its many miradores, or magnificent viewpoints), and then back to Funchal and on to Caniço and the hotel.
Funchal It’ s definitely a worthwhile effort, too, spending a non-diving afternoon in the island’ s capital; you can easily access it by public bus from the hotel. We recommend starting with the city tour on a double-decker bus; the tour sets off from the bus station. Later, you can explore this sparkling, dreamy city for yourself. Perhaps you’ ll treat yourself to the famous Madeiran aperitifs for dinner, or round off the day with a nightcap of Madeira wine in one of the colourful squares. It’ s as much a part of the experience as certain as the sunrise. Another insider tip: the seafood restaurant“ A Traineira” is not far from the diving centre in Canico de Baixo.
