Dear reader,
a marine protected area that has been in place for decades – and which has been fully respected in every way from the very beginning – is simply the best thing that could happen for nature. However, diving is not entirely legal in every such area.
With is in mind, the‘ Garajau Partial Nature Reserve’ is a real stroke of luck for divers. Established in 1986 on the south coast of Madeira to prevent the seabed from becoming barren, the area has become an underwater paradise in the period following
its establishment. No fishing, no spearfishing, controlled boat trips: ideal conditions not only for the legendary, sometimes enormous groupers, deep-sea fish such as manta rays and, of course, plenty of smaller creatures. Well, and precisely because of this, not least for us divers too.
