What to do on Land / Jandia peninsula
The southern third of Fuerteventura presents a very contrasting image . Along the beaches on the east coast facing Africa , holiday centres have sprung up on the Costa Calma and near Morro Jable , while the west coast looks as untouched as ever . No wonder : most of the time , swimming there is truly life-threatening . Strong currents in combination with the surf ( right above ) repeatedly claim victims among holidaymakers who believe they can outwit the sea . An excursion to watch the spectacle leads along a well-paved gravel road to Cofete ( right ).
There is a viewpoint on the ridge from where you can see the coast for kilometres . But : check with the car hire company beforehand whether driving on the gravel road is permitted by contract .
On the way back , almost at the foot of the hills again , is the turn-off to Faro de Jandia ( below ). Fresh air activities off Morro Jable include beach walks near the lighthouse and a sperm whale skeleton ( right , centre ) and cycling on the well-developed cycle paths that run parallel to the coast ( right , bottom ).
It ‘ s hard to believe : just around the corner from here is the island ‘ s southernmost diving spot – completely protected
