Madison County has a long way to go when it comes to social justice , say those who work in several areas of the issue .

Though the nation fought a war against slavery in the 1800s and experienced the civil rights and women ’ s movements of the 1900s , leading to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 , the Voting Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act , neither equality nor equity has been gained for marginalized residents , including people of color , women , those with disabilities or those who identify as LGBTQ +, they say .
Equality means everyone has access to the same resources and opportunities , though outcomes may differ depending on a variety of circumstances . Equity levels the playing field so that outcomes are relatively the same .
