However , we recommend that you simply purchase the most powerful flashlight possible within your budget . Likewise , one strong flash is better than two weak lights because the extent of light penetration into water depends on the strength of the light and not the number of lights , but the multiplicity of lights allows to reduce the appearance of sharp shadows in the image . The strength of flash light is indicated by a number that expresses the brightness of the light it can produce at ISO100 , but the density of the water makes the actual brightness underwater less than half what that number indicates .
In addition to the brightness number , attention should also be paid to another specification in the flash light , which is the color temperature that affects the white tones in the image , as the flash light can be closer to the blue spectrum ( or cooler ) or closer to the red spectrum ( or warmer ). Color temperature is measured in units ( Kelvin ), with larger numbers indicating cooler light ( 5500 K ), while smaller numbers indicating warmer light ( 4,700 K ). One of the most common accessory flash lights used in underwater photography ( snoot ), which reduces the angle of spread of light and makes the lighting circle smaller . Where
