DZ: If you had to sum up your life’s
mission in terms of priority in fi ve words
or less; what would that list look like?
LY: 1. Growth, 2. Education, 3. Giving
back, 4. Learning from life. I can sum it
up this way: Earn, Learn, and Return. It’s
cyclical.
DZ: What inspires you as an artist?
LY: When I was 13, I had a vision of The
Holy Spirit coming out of my horn and
giving the crowd of people what they
needed in terms of healing. Music is a
powerful force and when the intention is
right, it is a great source of strength and
healing to people in need of it. I love the
ability to minister (serve) others with my
gift.
DZ: How focused are you on music?
On a scale of one to ten, with ten being
insanely focused?
LY: In college I was at 12. My spirit is at
10 currently. In reality, however, (laughs)
I have to say I am a 7 now. I am still
passionate, but, as you know we must
balance life and give attention to more
than one area.
DZ: Do you have a ‘bucket list’?
LY: I have been blessed to travel abroad,
learn, see so many things, experience
various cultures already; many people
may never experience what I have already
at this point. I would love to continue the
path to do more of the same. Master
other disciplines. It goes back to the
summary of Earn, Learn, and Return. Be
an agent of change.
DZ: What sparked your humanitarian
efforts? I know you do many non-profi t
things to raise money for causes.
LY: I was infl uenced by my father who
would literally give you the shirt off his
back and sacrifi ce to see you on your
feet. My pastor was a great teacher and
leader by example. He mimicked Christ’s
humility in so many ways for me. I was
determined to use my life and my gifts to
assist others in need. I believe that is what
Jesus left as a blueprint for us all to build
upon. Serving others is so rewarding. I
know you know what I’m talking about.
DZ: How important are women to society?
LY: We owe everything to women. In my
opinion women are the fi rst expression
of God. The strength, love, support, and
the tenacity of sisters who have held the
black family together in the absence of
men is amazing. I have great gratitude
for women. Your contribution to all life is
unmatched.
DZ: How do you want to be remembered?
I am speaking legacy.
LY: Wow. Great question. I would like
to be remembered as someone who
inspired others to live beyond their own
self-imposed limitations, to light the
torch of their divine nature to be the
best version of themselves as possible.
To reclaim the dreams of their youth
whether it is going back to school or
writing that book. I want to help others
realize that this human experience is
about more than working a job you don’t
like. Do what you love. Open a business
and create jobs for others. I want to leave
behind a legacy of inspiration.
care.

DZ: Do you have any hobbies outside of
music?
LY: In fact, I do. I enjoy making soy based
candles and holistic bath and body
products. The product line is called Body
Fusion. I’ll send you some.
DZ:Is there an artist you’d love to work on
a project with one day?
LY: Wow. There are a few, but Lalah
Hathaway is defi nitely on the top of my
list.
DZ: Well, my friend, I appreciate you and
I am grateful for your time, your artistry
and your example. I am sure our readers
will be inspired and encouraged by this
interview. I have been. Where can your
music be purchased?
LY: Thank you so much, Najiyyah. It’s
been a pleasure. My projects can be
purchased on CD Baby. I am looking
forward to celebrating with you and The
DIVA Zone again in the near future.
DZ:Are you working on any new music?
LY: Well, right now I am working on a
great interview with an amazing, beautiful
woman. Laughs. And yes, you can print
that. Laughs. Seriously, I am working on
new music. It is a combination of jazz and
inspirational.
DZ: Well, I appreciate you
my dear. I cannot wait to hear
what’s next. How responsive
are you to your fan base? Do
you personally respond?
LY: I take pride in letting
supporters of my music and
live music in general know
that they are appreciated.
Occasionally, I receive some
off the wall comments or
questions clearly crossing
the line and I have put
an immediate end to the
conversation.
However, I
love communication and
I love people. So, as long
as it’s not too personal and
respectful, I respond with
