President’s Message President Jordan Lee, Utility Service Company Welcome to 2018! I hope that the year is off to a great start for each of you, and that it’s the best year yet for you, your employees, and your company! It seems that we have a lot going for us this year -- what seems like an awesome new tax law, a strong economy, and a mid-term election year. On the new tax law, I’m not here to tell you how to run your business, but remember your employees; without them you’d be doing a lot of work on your own. With the strong economy, don’t forget to reinvest in your company and to put a little aside each pay period for a rainy day. Lastly, the mid-term elections. This is really how we can come together as an association. The Bidding for Benjamin’s campaign has been concluded for 2017. We had a very soft start, and the winner for 2017 is Johnson and Davis! Way to go guys!!! Let me go into detail a little about what Bidding for Benjamin’s is all about. First, we no longer have a PAC. The laws have changed on PACs, and they are just too complicated for our association. We are still able to contribute and support our chosen legislators through donations from our association through standard style donations. Our “Political Account” is not the strongest but it’s one of the best ways to make our voices heard. The Bidding for Benjamin’s campaign was created to help fund that account. We are asking you to set aside $100 for every project you are awarded and donate it to the Bidding for Benjamin’s. The company that has the most winning bids will get some sort of award each year. One of the other ways you can make our voices heard is to come to the NUCA of FL Legislative Days in Tallahassee in February. There you’ll hear about everything we are pushing for and involved in. You’ll also get a chance to meet with our politicians face-to-face. You might just get to know them better, and I can tell you first hand, when they get to know you, they remember you. Now onto some other fun things that you can be a part of - -the Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Bass Fishing tournament. This is also coming up in February. It takes place at the Rolland Martin Marina on Lake Okeechobee. This will give you the chance to unseat last years winners, your great leaders team, the Lees! You’ll experience one of the most fun tournaments there is, I promise. Also, I would like to invite y’all down to The Ocean Reef Club for our NUCA of FL Annual Meeting! This will be a very fun year, at an extremely beautiful and nice location! Last but not least, we are still needing to grow our association. Do me a favor, look over your calendars. I’d like to challenge everyone to invite at least one non- member to an event. Show them what this group is about, and explain to them what we can offer them. Our association’s membership is a lot like a family tree. The goal is to be like an oak tree. Deep roots and lots of branches. At the moment we have the deep roots part covered but we need more branches. Lastly, I’d like to end on an extremely strong note by saying ... Roll Tide! • • • JANUARY 2018 • DITCHMEN 7
