New legislators can be less guarded of their opinions and interests . In your conversations , find out their backgrounds , families , what they do for a living , what are their concerns , and what do they want to accomplish in the legislature .

Legislators travel a lot . They travel between their districts and Tallahassee . They also travel to various association and industry conferences and political events between committee weeks . They also have day jobs that can require travel as well . When initially meeting with freshmen legislators try to share cell phone numbers with the elected official and their staff . You want to be one of the first people they call if an issue affecting your industry or community arises . Some legislators also like to receive texts or email from their constituents . Find out what works best for your legislator and continue to check-in periodically .

New legislators can be less guarded of their opinions and interests . In your conversations , find out their backgrounds , families , what they do for a living , what are their concerns , and what do they want to accomplish in the legislature . You might find things you have in common as well as

4 . Offer Help

Freshmen and their staff are learning a lot in a short period of time to prepare for the upcoming committee weeks and Session . They need help from anyone and everyone . Offer to identify and organize local experts on yours and others ’ issues . Maybe they do not know someone in a particular industry , but you may . Offer to arrange a site visit at a job site , workplace or with a local membership group or association , such as your local NUCA chapter . Legislators love to learn and meet potential voters . Identifying opportunities to help and filling a void further solidifies relationships .

5 . Be Patient , Diligent and Flexible

Remember many of the freshmen have not yet hired staff or found local office space . Some may be reluctant to meet until they do . Legislators sometimes need their safe spaces and hands held until they get a swing of their jobs . Be patient , diligent and flexible in order to make meetings happen .
