President’s Message
President Jordan Lee,
Utility Service Company
Let me begin by saying thank
you for being involved with
this awesome association! In
case you haven’t noticed, we
have some of the greatest
members there are. Let
me ask you a question, just
something to think about. Do
you love your job? I have a
very strong feeling we all do.
Now what is it that makes you
feel this way? Do you believe
your co-workers do as well?
I would hope they do! If you
are unsure, I challenge you
to ask them-see what they
think, listen to their input, and
you might just find something
that can make your company
even better and stronger!
We all know you can’t make
everyone happy, but there
might be a small change
that could boost company
morale, and we all know a
happy crew is a productive
crew!
On that same line, are you still
having fun? We are all driven
people, who are extremely
busy and if you’re anything
like I am you rarely stop long
enough to take a minute to
truly clear your head. The
week before last, we had
three projects wrapping up
about the same time. Going
through punch lists, we had
a lot of small items that were
easy to knock out but it made
me a little frustrated that we
missed them in production
and they were on the list. I
was on my way to meet with
one of our crews and stopped
for a sandwich; I’m not big on
eating while driving and there
weren’t any open tables. I
got it to go and was about
three blocks from the Bay, so
I drove down by the water,
sat on my tailgate and ate my
lunch. Let me tell you-after
my lunch break comprised of
eating my sandwich, enjoying
my sweet tea and watching a
school of mullet mill around
the rip-rap rock pile a little
ways off the beach, I was in
a whole different mindset. I
believe we are all super busy,
but I also believe we can all
take a short break every so
often to take a breather, clear
our heads, and in all-that will
probably provide a different
outlook on things. In my case,
instead of going straight to
the project, laying it all out
for the crew in a manner that
could have made me lose
my cool, I was more level-
headed and had a good
conversation that benefited
everyone by pointing out
everything in a better manner.
I just wanted to pass that little
bit of advice along because
it has made a difference for
me, and I believe it could
help you. I’m not telling you
to slack off, but just take a
minute to park, get out of
your truck and clear your
head for a little bit every now
and then somewhere other
than your office or a job site.
Speaking of relaxing, if you
haven’t already signed up,
click on the link scrolling
through the ad in the
Ditchmen for the annual
meeting at Ocean Reef. I can’t
think of a better place to hang
out with great people! Not
only is it a lot of fun, but you’ll
learn from our speakers and
it gives you a chance to get
more involved with NUCA
of Florida. Plus, just in the
case you don’t know a lot of
NUCA of Florida members,
the conference will give you
a great opportunity to meet
some of the best people
there are anywhere. Can’t wait
to see y’all down there!
