Begin with a 35-mile drive from Puerto Madryn to the Valdes Peninsula, an important nature reserve listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Your first stop will be at the visitors’ center, where you will learn about this amazing ecosystem that features a variety of marine life, including orcas, elephant seals, fur seals and Magellanic penguins. Next, continue to Caleta Valdes, a 21-mile stretch of protected land, to see southern elephant seals, considered to be the world’ s largest seals. There are different hiking paths and overlooks that will allow you to further explore. Continue to Puerto Piramides, where you will view a sea lion colony and possibly watch orcas hunting for sea lions on the shore, with a unique technique they developed by stranding themselves on the beach. On the way back to the cruise ship, you will eat lunch, looking out for guanacos, maras, choiques, foxes and armadillos along the way.
