THE ISSUE...

SO OUR QUESTION WAS...

How does disney animated films influence the construction of gender in young children?

Walt Disney Pictures. is one of the most influential companies in the industry of animation, having reached the hearts of millions of kids and adults form around the worls. However, we believe that such power could carry very significant consequences.

Disney's influence and domination of the animation industry the depiction of their female characters, most commonly known as “Disney princesses”, affect the perception of love and gender roles among young girls during their childhood. In other words, the way the attitudes and values of certain Disney princesses shape a girl’s behavior in a way that construct gender roles. Whether is the concept of “femininity”, the act of becoming a woman, or the set of sexual appeals that should make a woman a desirable object.

We believe that this issue is very important because nowadays children are increasingly exposed

to the mass media, especially movies, and this makes animated films the perfect medium to

make both boys and girls to start generating ideas and questions like: What does it take to be a

real man? What is the purpose of a woman in society? What is love? What is the importance of

femininity? What does beauty mean in a woman? Do men need to protect women? Etc.
