Anyway, Sears, Roebuck and Company was a retail giant with 19th-century roots as a mail-order business operating in rural America. Sears grew into one of the nation's largest corporations, redefining the American shopping experience in the process. Beginning in 1893, the Sears and Roebuck mail-order business quickly took off. The Sears catalog contained more than 500 pages of merchandise by the late 1890s
Now, the first Sears Christmas Wish Book catalog came out in 1933. The catalog contained toys and other holiday gift merchandise. As a kid, I would go through every page of their catalog, which was a thick catalog of more than 500 pages, as I mentioned. As a young kid, I always enjoyed looking at the toy selection the most. The catalog, which arrived in mailboxes in late August or early September, soon became a holiday tradition, with warm, colorful Christmas scenes decorating the cover. Anyway, by October 2018, Sears' parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and I am sure the last remaining five stores will soon shutter their operations.
This next business is a grocery store called Chatham, which was very popular
consumer electronics, and appliances. Fretter stores were typically located near major shopping malls and were open seven days a week. The company had 64 stores in Michigan as well as other states, with headquarters in Livonia, Michigan. In May 1996, all Fretter stores closed for good. Oliver Fretter died on June 29, 2014, at the age of 91.

Also, at one time this department store chain had 3,500 stores at its peak, and now it is down to only five stores as of 2026.
Now, some people may have never heard of this next place, but as a youth I saw this chain of stores in Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Wyandotte, Dearborn, as well as many locations in the city of Detroit and other places. The chain, called Federal's, was a department store that had 54 stores at one time. Federal's sold clothing for men, women, and children.
Home goods included household items, kitchenware, and furniture. Electronics departments sold basic electronics and appliances, and the stores also provided a selection of toys and gift items. Federal's was founded in 1929. The chain filed for bankruptcy in 1972. The company was then liquidated in 1980 and went out of business that same year.
