I was married at 19. I had a child, was divorced, and became a heroin addict in my early twenties. I remained a practicing heroin addict for 10 years. This experience allowed me to see life from a totally different vantage point than the way I grew up. While living in a suburban dysfunctional middle-class family and having everything that I could possibly want, I always felt like an outsider. The secrets that I harbored kept me feeling separate.

Very often people ask what possessed me to start a safe house for human trafficking victims. When I give that question thought, I realize that my whole life was preparing me for what I would do later in life. It appears that I was being groomed to do this work of helping women, without knowing it. While I was thinking that there needed to be a better way to live my life, including my shady years, and my always being for the underdog, these would serve me well.
