Now, the Visger family bought a private tract on the banks of the river for “two quarts of whiskey and other valuable considerations.” In addition, there were several other families included in the original land purchase; some of these were the Riopelle’s, Ferguson’s, Labadie’s, and the Godfrey’s. These families bought strip farms along the river. These tracts fronted on the river and extended south to what is now Southfield Road. Even by today’s standards those were hugh pieces of land.

This next article is about a city that I grew up in from birth till 19 years old when I left. When you look at the city today, it is so run down in need of a makeover compared to when I was living there. I believe one day this city will make a comeback.

Anyway, you will find that the seeds of River Rouge were sown in the late 1700s when French residents of Detroit purchased land along the “River Rouge” for a small amount. The Indians did not know the value of the land, and they sold it for a very small sum of money and goods.
