FRANCINE SHARES

Neonatal Lupus – a rare condition affecting newborns of mothers with certain autoimmune antibodies.

Common symptoms of lupus may include fatigue, fever, joint pain, swelling and stiffness, skin rashes, and the characteristic butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. Additional symptoms can include sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss, chest pain, shortness of breath, dry eyes, headaches, brain fog, and Raynaud's phenomenon, which may cause fingers and toes to turn blue, white, or purple in response to cold temperatures or stress.

"Although there is currently no cure for lupus, advances in research and treatment continue to improve quality of life and outcomes for many patients. Early diagnosis, ongoing medical care, and increased awareness are essential."

One of the most serious forms of lupus involves the kidneys and is known as Lupus nephritis. This condition occurs when lupus attacks the kidneys, leading to inflammation and impaired kidney function. If not properly managed, lupus nephritis can progress to kidney failure. Some patients may require dialysis, immunosuppressive medications such as CellCept (mycophenolate mofetil/MMF), or even a kidney transplant.

Although there is currently no cure for lupus, advances in research and treatment continue to improve quality of life and outcomes for many patients. Early diagnosis, ongoing medical care, and increased awareness are essential.

As we recognize Lupus Awareness, I remember Sharon Harris not only as an advocate but as a courageous warrior, mentor, and friend. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the awareness she helped create. Sharon's voice may be silent, but her impact will continue to speak for generations to come.
