Lastly, this final business in Michigan is Art Van Furniture, where I worked for 19 years, starting in 1993 in the city of Taylor. Art Van Furniture Art Van Elslander opened his first furniture store in 1959, a 4,000-square-foot facility
located on Gratiot in East Detroit. Over time, Art Van Furniture, Inc. grew into the largest furniture store chain in the state of Michigan and the eighth largest nationwide in terms of sales volume, employing around 3,000 employees.
At its height, Art Van operated 176 stores across nine states, though when I worked there, it was strictly Michigan-based stores that I was familiar with. In Michigan alone, the company eventually grew to about 85 stores at its peak.
