Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

at Nags Head Woods and over 50 bird species nests there. Fifteen species of amphibians and 28 species of reptiles have been documented as well. The freshwater ponds are inhabited by seven species of fish and many reptiles and amphibians in addition to a great diversity of floating aquatic plant life, including the rare water violet. Trails are for foot traffic only. Dogs, bicycles, and horses are welcome on the gravel roadway, but not on the trails.

Also on the Outer Banks is Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge at 100 Conservation Way in the city of Manteo. The refuge includes more than 154,000 wildlife acres of wetland habitats and a wide variety of wildlife, ranging from wood ducks and alligators to black bears and red wolves. Plant species, including Atlantic white cedar, bald cypress, wildflowers, and shrubs, are abundant. Visitors will find hiking and wildlife trails, observation platforms, fishing areas, and kayaking and canoeing routes.

This next attraction is very nice, and that is the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island at 374 Airport Road in the city of Manteo. Experience a whole new adventure as you explore the waters in and around the Outer Banks.

Exhibits educate visitors as they journey through coastal freshwater habitats to find river otters, turtles, and American alligators. Wander into a sunken treasure ship as a variety of marine animals swim all around. Touch a stingray, wonder at sea jellies, and marvel at history. Watch sharks cruise by in the 285,000-gallon Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit. Free daily programs as well as fee-based tours and outdoor adventures are offered throughout the year. Admission is $12.95 or less.

Now, nearby is the Roanoke Island Festival Park at 1 Festival Park in the city of Manteo. Roanoke Island Festival Park
