FEATURED POEM
This is a poem that I wrote several years ago that celebrated the origin, strength and fortitude of the Black woman. I featured this poem in a previous issue and the readers really enjoyed the poem. I am featuring it again to commemorate Black History Month, enjoy.
I AM A BLACK WOMAN
In the beginning, when the creator spoke life into existence, my origin took place. When God said let us create man in our image and likeness and let them rule over the earth--- my destiny was pronounced. God took me from the rib of my man to walk beside him and walk with him, calling me forth to be the mother of a great people.
When God said, "It is not good for man to be alone", he created me to be the perfect helper for him. I would be the neck to hold up the head of a great ruler. Man looked at me and blessed the Lord, for he knew that I was conceived from his flesh, from his bones. We were naked and we were not ashamed. I toiled the ground and admired the rising and falling of the sun.
My days were warm and soothing, and my nights were cool and calm. My heart was full of splendor, for my world was then perfect unsuspecting of my beguiling fate. Wealth and riches are stirred up in my soul, crying out to reach its fullest potential. My skin color has made me one of the most beautiful creations in God's universe, reflecting His taste for ultimate beauty.
I AM A BLACK WOMAN
Poem by Dr. Tunishai Ford
My hands have helped build nations. My breast has suckled the finest men. My womb carried kings and princes, and mighty leaders that were to come. My feet walked on the riches soil that our people would come to harvest the fruit of impeccable flavor. My mind would be recognized for its ultimate ability to create, and my name would be engraved in the book that would tell of my courage, determination, and insurmountable strength. For I am a precious jewel.
